Minister Blade Nzimande Launches Sol Plaatje University
The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, has hailed the launch of Sol Plaatje University in the Northern Cape as a major milestone in the transformation and expansion of the higher education sector. Minister Nzimande outlined the four key pillars underpinning the launch of Sol Plaatje University:
- A 10-year development plan that would see the university adopting a phased approach to growth, starting with a modest start of 135 students and three academic programmes for 2014 and gradually increasing to achieve a target of 7 500 students by 2024.
- A high-powered and dedicated Interim University Council that is currently leading the university through the early development phase, while developing its long-term teaching and research programme and is tasked with appointing the interim university management team and appointing a full council.
- The identity and character of the university, designed to build on the legacy of Sol Plaatje to provide a space for the exchange of ideas and production of knowledge, while contributing to the transformation, growth and development of the country's economy.
- The physical development of the university, which would see the development of three campuses - Central, Northern and Southern - with an initial focus on renovating existing buildings for the 2014 student intake while simultaneously constructing new buildings in time for the 2015 academic year.
